TRIAL OPERATIONS START AT DEEP WATER PAKISTANI TERMINAL

Part of the global HPH group, Pakistan Deep Water Container Port (PDWCP) has started to carry out test operations in advance of its official opening in January 2017. The first container ship to visit the Karachi port facility, which has a design draft of 16m, was the APL Japan.

Under the first phase of development, the terminal operator, South Asia Pakistan Terminals (SAPT), has constructed two berths, while two more berths could be built as part of a second phase of development. Investment in the new facility, which will allow Pakistan’s port sector to accommodate large new generation mother ships, is estimated to have been over US$ 600 million, including five ship-to-shore gantry cranes. Initial capacity will be around 3 million teu a year.
